Two tips for renovating your commercial premises

Posted on: 28 April 2017

If your commercial premises is looking a bit worse for wear and you're considering having it renovated, here are a few tips which may help you with this process.

Address the fundamental problems first

Making cosmetic changes is a lot more enjoyable and exciting than addressing issues relating to your premise's electrics, damp problem or structural stability. However, it's vital to deal with the latter before the former. If you don't, you could end up wasting a significant amount of money and drastically increasing the length of the renovation project.

For example, let's say that there are some electrical wiring problems in your building. However, instead of dealing with these issues first, you decide to re-plaster and add a fresh lick of paint to the walls. Depending on the size of the space, this could take anywhere from a couple of days to a few weeks. Assuming it is carried out by professional plasterers and decorators, it is also likely to cost you at least a few hundred dollars, if not more.

If this work is carried out before your commercial electrical contractors have had a chance to re-wire the building, all of the above-mentioned plastering and painting will have been a complete waste of time and money, as a full re-wiring almost always involves tearing through a building's walls, in order to access the cables located behind them. In this situation, you would end up having to re-do all of the plastering and decoration work a second time.

As such, it's vital not to allow yourself to be tempted to make cosmetic updates before these type of issues have been dealt with.

Hire a specialist building contractor

A commercial renovation project is very different to a residential one. It's not just about creating an aesthetically-pleasing space, but also about ensuring that premises projects an image which is in keeping with your brand and is enticing to customers.

The renovation work needs to be done with your customers or clients in mind; for example, when choosing a new layout for a retail business, it would be important to ensure that the shelving units used to display the merchandise are positioned at eye height (in order to attract the attention of passers-by) and that the aisles of the shop are wide enough to accommodate large numbers of customers.

This is why you should try to hire a building contractor who has extensive experience in renovating commercial premises that are similar to yours. This will make the renovation process a lot less stressful, as the contractor will have the knowledge needed to help you make the right decisions regarding things such as layout, lighting, merchandise storage, etc. For more information, contact companies like Aardvark Electrics.
